“...the diminished resources also contributed to the defeat of Axis powers, especially in Europe.” continued your history teacher while fixing her cat-eye shaped glasses. It was quite a stereotypical look, as was her demeanour that screamed she did not enjoy this class nor her life, but at least you always did well on her exams so you wouldn't complain much.

“And this class is contributing to my diminishing energy.”

Ah there it is, you thought as a few of your classmates snickered at the comment. Gilbert looked smug from the table he was sitting, not even trying to hide the fact that he was not looking at the textbook or the teacher, gazing from the window to the basketball court below, grinning slightly. He didn’t yell, nor was he loud, but he didn’t need to. At this point everyone expected him to interrupt Miss Baker at least once every class.

The feud between them started at the beginning of the school year when she gave him detention that kept him from participating in the basketball match. It maybe wouldn’t be too bad if he was not the ace of the team, but it costed them their chance to participate in the upcoming tournaments. Since then he would take every opportunity he had to make a snide comment in her classes or make sure to deliberately do drills near her parked car.

If it was anyone else, the other students would be fed up at this point but this was Gilbert. Him and his younger brother were the ones that carried the whole school in tournaments and matches, the latter being the quarterback of the football team. It also didn’t hurt that they were quite the lookers, which attracted the attention of everyone since they started attending your international school two years ago, moved from Germany.

“Mr Beilschmidt, I was wondering why you were so quiet today, how nice of you to contribute to the discussion. See me after class.” she replied with a sigh.

Gathering the supplies for the next class you headed towards the door once the bell rang signalling the end of the second period, only to be stopped by the teacher.

“If you could stay back for a while I would appreciate it greatly.” she said touching your arm gently as Gilbert approached her desk, his arms crossed. Your best friend gave you a pitying look and mouthed see you at lunch as she left with the others.

“Am I in trouble?” you asked which Gilbert scoffed in return.

“Oh no not at all. I just wanted to ask you if you would be willing to do some extra credit for me. I heard you were looking for a few more things to write on your resume?”

“Yes!” you replied maybe too enthusiastically “That would help me a lot. What would you like me to do?”

“That’s easy. I want you to tutor Mr Beilschmidt here. To make sure he passes from my class as he is on thin ice right now.”

That was not what you expected her to say, and it would seem it was not what Gilbert expected either as he finally turned to look at her and to you.

“What? No offence Miss but I think I will be okay on my own I don’t need help, especially from her. I don’t care if I pass or fail either.” he added quickly. You were not happy with the arrangement either but the blatant rejection and animosity he had towards you hurt a little.

You were not sure where his dislike for you started as unlike the relationship he had with the teacher, you two were getting along quite well when he first started school. You were the first person he befriended and you got really close really quickly, meaning you developed a not so little crush. Something must have changed along the way however, as he started hanging out with other people and now in your senior year you were no better than strangers. A stranger that he clearly disliked. And your not so little crush was suppressed.

“Well, maybe you should. As far as I know, you cannot be a part of the sports teams if you fail your classes Mr Beilschmidt, am I wrong?” Miss Baker replied before turning her attention to you as Gilbert let out a quiet groan “Is this arrangement okay for you dear?”

“I would be happy to help.” you nodded. She waved her hand in dismissal and returned to the book in front of her which both of you took as a sign to get out.

“Let's meet at the library after your practice.”

After leaving the classroom you had to run to catch up with Gilbert, who was walking quickly towards the gym. He gave a curt nod but didn’t turn to look at you. “I leave at six is that okay?”

“Sure. I will see you around then.”

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

He was an hour late.

A half-eaten sandwich and a scolding from the librarian for bring food in, you finally decided to give up on waiting when he busted through the doors, clearly running as he was breathing heavily.

“I am sorry.” he said after spotting you which made the librarian glance at him angrily. “The coach made me stay behind to talk about something and I didn’t realize the time.”

“It’s fine. Let’s just start so I can go back before it gets too dark.”

He looked like he has been through hell since you saw him in the morning. His bright hair was a mess and was sticking in lots of different directions while his uniform was much in the same condition, his shirt wrinkled and his tie forgotten somewhere. Despite all, he still managed to look good, and even cute with the little yellow bird pin on his sweater pocket. No wonder he had the attention of all the girls since he entered the room you thought.

“Would you like to rest before we start.” you backtracked as he sat down “You look really tired.”

“Would that be okay?” he asked as he took his books out “I can walk you home after this is you want.”

“That’s fine. We will study around this hour every day until the final next week. So I will figure something out.” you shook your head.

“I wouldn't mind walking you back for the rest of the week.” he replied as he rested his head on the table, closing his eyes “You live far from the school.”

You didn’t think he remembered where you lived or didn’t expect him to offer such a thing out of the blue. He was cold one time and kind in another, seemed like despised you once but now looked comfortable in your presence.

“Did something bad happen?” you asked as an attempt to change the topic and sort your confusing feelings out.

“I was told off by the coach. He implied he shouldn’t have taken me to the team because of my lack of diligence.” he scrunched his nose “Well he didn’t actually imply it he said it just like that.”

“I’m sorry to hear that. Well...The sooner we finish the sooner you can go back to practise right? To show him that you want to stay in. And you will also get rid of me sooner.”

He looked taken aback for a moment as he straightened himself up and stared at you which made you think you overstepped your line about the going back to practice part. Maybe he didn’t even want that or maybe he didn’t even care about practising and now you sounded like an overbearing teacher and you should probably apolo-

“Why would I want to get rid of you?” he asked, “I like spending time with you…”

Now it was your turn to be surprised. “I thought you- I mean we don’t hang out like-” you stuttered leaning away from him and tilting your head “Than why did you start avoiding me?”

“I thought you knew? I mean...I had a crush on you and...it’s very stereotypical, right? Having a crush on your best friend? I even told you...and well you rejected me…”

“I did what?!” you yelled which the librarian let out a ‘shhh’ for.
“You seriously don’t remember? I asked you to the dance the first year I was here and you said you didn’t want to.” he murmured, sounding quite irritated.

“I….no I didn’t know you were asking me out I thought u wanted to go as friends...and I didn’t want that…” you replied quietly, finally remembering the day he was talking about “To stay as friends I mean.”

He turned up at your house the day before the event and asked you to go with him. There was nothing different about him, no romantic implications or so you thought, which made you believe you were a last-minute resort.

His face became red when he understood the implications of your words and he let out an ‘oh’ as he averted his gaze. “Once this is over then, would you come and watch my game?” he asked softly, still not looking at you.

“I...Yeah, I would like that” you answered fighting of a smile “But you have to pass the exam for that.”

“You will see” he replied finally meeting your gaze “I will also be walking you back home and I don’t take no for an answer.”

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After the results were up you saw Gilbert waiting for you outside of the class.

"So what did you get? I got a B+" he said beaming like a child that got a new toy. It meant he was gonna be able to play in the upcoming game and protect his spot on the team. You were happy for him yes, but you were even happier that now you would be able to go and watch him.

"An A." you replied nonchalantly, taking his hand in yours. His head snapped towards you, brows furrowed, clearly, his competitive side coming out.

"Was ?! Ich akzeptiere diesen Scheiß nicht!!"
Was? Ich akzeptiere diesen Scheiß nicht! --> What? I do not accept this shit.

1,161 Views and 113 Favourites ?? Thanks, guys !! ^^

EDIT: After years (like 6 years?) of forgetting about this I came back to see it had 17K read count so I decided to edit and change the whole story with better writing I guess...I edited this in like 25 mins and didn't do proofread so read at your expense. So we no longer have a Harry Potter reference there. And my rabbit, which was called Gilbun died years ago so if you see comments about this you now know I edited them out. And reading all the old work and my reply to the comments made me cringe lol but I kinda miss those times...
